One of the classes is a poem, story or other writing related to bee-keeping. This year I entered a &#8220;retirement speech&#8221;, and <b>hid within it no less than 40 references to bee-keeping<\/b>. The piece earned me a second prize in the class, which sounds pretty good until you realise there were only two entries. But anyway here is that speech for your entertainment. Click anywhere (or hover your mouse) within the speech text to reveal the hidden references.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"50%\">\n<div id=\"speech\" style=\"color: navy; position: relative;\">As you <pun><def><b>mite<\/b> &#8211; as in Varroa mite, a bee parasite<\/def>might<\/pun> know, <pun><def><b>forage<\/b> &#8211; the process of looking around for food, and the food found that way<\/def>for&nbsp;age<\/pun> reasons \u2013 I\u2019m not in my <pun><def>a prime swarm &#8211; 1st swarm to leave<\/def>prime<\/pun>, <pun><def><b>virgin<\/b> &#8211; an unmated queen bee<\/def>vergin\u2019<\/pun> on the aged, <pun><def><b>mead<\/b> &#8211; an alcoholic drink made with honey<\/def>me&nbsp;d<\/pun>ays are numbered \u2013 I\u2019ve decided to <pun><def><b>pollen<\/b> &#8211; what the bees feed their larvae<\/def>pull in<\/pun> the reins and start re<pun><def>What an angry female bee can do!<\/def>sting<\/pun>. So have a <pun><def><b>popolis<\/b> &#8211; a sticky substance made from tree sap used by the bees as glue<\/def>proper lis<\/pun>ten to this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<pun><def><b>Hive<\/b> &#8211; a man-made home for a bee colony<\/def>HI\u2019ve<\/pun> had a <pun><def>Part of a hive where bees keep their stores<\/def>super<\/pun> time, and to <pun><def>The adding, by the bees, of a wax seal or cap over a honey cell<\/def>cap<\/pun> it all\u2026 I\u2019ve been supported by my wife. It would be <pun><def>The process of pouring honey into jars for sale<\/def>jarring<\/pun> to <pun><def><b>Excluder<\/b> &#8211; a grill used to stop the queen passing from one part of the hive to another<\/def>exclude&nbsp;\u2018er<\/pun> from this; she\u2019s been my <pun><def>Pre-formed wax sheet used as a starter for bees building comb<\/def>foundation<\/pun>, <pun><def>Used to raise a beehive off the ground and to a comfortable working height<\/def>stand<\/pun>ing by me even when she was <pun><def>Eggs and larvae still in their cells<\/def>brood<\/pun>y. She\u2019<pun><def><b>skep<\/b> &#8211; an old style of beehive, woven from wicker or straw<\/def>s kep<\/pun>t <pun><def>One job on the career ladder of a honey bee, keeping guard at the colony entrance<\/def>guard<\/pun> <pun><def><b>ova<\/b> &#8211; plural of ovum, or egg<\/def>over<\/pun> me, <pun><def>An earlier job, where bees care for and feed the brood<\/def>nurse<\/pun>d me and made sure I <pun><def><b>Beehive<\/b><\/def>behive<\/pun> myself. She\u2019s my <pun><def>Processed nectar stored as food for the bees<\/def>honey<\/pun>; no-one can hold a <pun><def>Beeswax candles are often made as by-product by beekeepers<\/def>candle<\/pun> to her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Life <pun><def><b>wasp<\/b> &#8211; the arch-enemy of bees!<\/def>was&nbsp;p<\/pun>retty good, and I\u2019ve had a <pun><def><b>larva<\/b> &#8211; the pupa, or grub, form of an immature bee<\/def>larv,&nbsp;a<\/pun> right laugh. It\u2019s been <pun><def><b>egg<\/b> &#8211; the first stage in the bee life-cycle<\/def>eg<\/pun><pun><def>An individual unit of storage in the honeycomb, for brood or stores<\/def>cell<\/pun>ent. I could <pun><def>A material secreted by bees for building the comb with<\/def>wax<\/pun> lyrical, but I won\u2019t <pun><def>A male bee &#8211; can&#8217;t sting, and does no work in the hive<\/def>drone<\/pun> on as you don\u2019t want me to <pun><def>Beekeepers may &#8220;spin out&#8221; the honey from the comb in a centrifugal extractor<\/def>spin<\/pun> it out. I\u2019ll stop <pun><def>The egg-laying individual bee in a colony<\/def>queen<\/pun>ing it and step off the <pun><def>Part of a beehive &#8211; may be solid or mesh<\/def>floor<\/pun>, out of the <pun><def>An individual sheet of honeycomb, supported by a wood surround<\/def>frame<\/pun>.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it\u2019<pun><def><b>swarm<\/b> &#8211; when a large group of bees leave the hive and form a new colony elsewhere<\/def>s&nbsp;warm<\/pun> here so please join me at the <pun><def>Part of a beehive &#8211; can be flat or pitched, covered in metal or roofing felt<\/def>roof<\/pun>&#8211;<pun><def>A style of artificial hive that favours bee welfare over honey production<?def>top&nbsp;bar<\/pun> for a <pun><def>A &#8220;queen cup&#8221; is an extended cell where a larva is fed royal jelly to become a new queen<\/def>cup<\/pun> of amber <pun><def>The liquid from some flowers, collected and turned into honey by bees<\/def>nectar<\/pun>; there should <pun><def><b>bee&nbsp;space<\/b> the optimal gap between frames to allow bees to move about freely<\/def>be&nbsp;space<\/pun> for our party, even if we have to shoe-<pun><def><b>hornet<\/b> &#8211; even more of a threat to bees than wasps are<\/def>horn&nbsp;it<\/pun> in.
